Counterstrain Consultation
Specialty Physician Consultation – 1-hour session.
Counterstrain is a technique used in osteopathic medicine and osteopathy to treat somatic dysfunction (impaired or altered function of bodily structures. It is a type of ‘positional release’; a hands-on treatment that alleviates muscle and connective tissue tightness by the use of very specific treatment positions held for 30-90 seconds.
The physician/therapist identifies a point of maximum pain, called a tender point. Monitoring the tender point, the physician/therapist positions the patient to maximally relieve the discomfort.
The physician/therapist holds the patient in the maximally relaxed position and then slowly returns the passive patient to a neutral body position. The success of counterstrain consultation is evaluated by reassessing both the tender point and any accompanying loss of range of motion.
This gentle and painless technique is a very effective treatment for a wide variety of orthopedic conditions such as headaches, fibromyalgia, sciatica, tendinitis, chronic neck pain, and post-surgical conditions.
Not included are diagnostic studies, consultations with additional specialists, and cost of complication management; travel, food, and lodging.
