Description

Specialty Surgeon Complete Packaged Procedure for a – Neck Surgery – Anterior Cervical Discectomy – Fusion 1 Level. This treatment plan is to reduce pain in the neck and arms and other symptoms that occur with a cervical disk herniation. A disk herniation occurs when the softer inner portion of the disk, the nucleus pulposus (a jelly-like substance) ruptures out through the harder outer portion of the disk, the annulus fibrosis. This rupture of disk material can put pressure on the spinal cord and spinal nerves producing neck and extremity pain. Arthritic conditions and bony spurs in the neck can also put pressure on the spinal cord and spinal nerves and also cause these symptoms. An anterior cervical discectomy and fusion is a surgical procedure to take pressure off the spinal cord and spinal nerves caused by a herniated disk and/or bony spurs. A small incision is made in the left side of the neck in the front and the disk and disk herniation are removed relieving pressure on the spinal cord and spinal nerves. The bones (vertebral bodies) are usually fashioned appropriately with a high speed bur and between the bones where the disk and disk herniation was a cage is placed. The cage is filled with bone from the patient?s own bone from the surgical procedure itself and a titanium metal plate is then placed over the cage and stabilized with screws to the vertebral bodies above and below the disk injury. This discectomy or removal of the disk and disk herniation material and spinal fusion with instrumentation which involves placement of the cage and plate and screws is done to promote bone growth between the two vertebral bodies in a spinal fusion.

When is a Neck Surgery – Anterior Cervical Discectomy – Fusion 1 Level performed?

When there is pressure on the spinal cord and spinal nerves by a herniated disk or bone spur, there may be irritation of these structures causing pain in the neck and arms and weakness and numbness in the arms and fingers. Significant pressure on the spinal cord can also cause problems in other parts of the body, such as the lower extremities and legs. Patients who have these symptoms that do not respond to non-surgical care are candidates for a surgical procedure.

How is Neck Surgery – Anterior Cervical Discectomy – Fusion 1 Level performed?

Patients are put to sleep by the anesthesiologist and are face up on the operating room table. A small incision is made in the left side of the neck. The soft tissues are pulled aside with retractors exposing the disks and spine. The intervertebral disk and disk herniation are removed and the vertebral body surrounding the disk injury is fashioned with a high speed bur. The bone is collected for use in the cervical fusion. A titanium plate is then placed along the front of the cervical spine secured with screws into the vertebral body above and below the area of the disk injury. A hard collar is usually not required for one and two-level surgical procedures. This procedure can be done up to four levels. At three and four levels, a hard collar is often recommended. In many cases, the procedure can be done in an outpatient fashion given the patient?s overall medical health. The wound is closed over a drain and patients usually leave the surgery center or hospital on the same day. The drain is usually removed on the first postoperative day and patients begin to return to normal activities as soon as possible.
