Gum disease is an infection of the tissues and bones that surround and support the teeth. It is also called periodontal disease.
The two stages of gum disease are called gingivitis and periodontics.
Treatment is medical (dental) for mild gum disease to surgical treatments for more advanced disease. Medical treatment includes professional teeth cleaning with tartar and plaque removal or scaling and root planing for plaque below the gum line, done under local anesthesia.
Surgery is needed when the tissue around your teeth is unhealthy and cannot be repaired with nonsurgical options.
Drugs to reduce oral bacteria may also be used in treatment. Treatment options range from more simple to complex that influences the cost of therapies.
The total cost includes a one-hour consultation with a specialist.
Not included are diagnostic studies, consultations with additional specialists, and cost of complication management; travel, food, and lodging.
