Many women have longed for the curvy bust line that flatters most fashions of yesterday and today

However, those with extremely large breasts are more concerned about pain than fashion.

Extreme back pain, breast pain, headaches and migraines, shortness of breath, neck aches and numbness down the arms in and paresthesias (nerve-tingling) in the fingers plagues large breasted women.

Large Breasts Can Cause Back Pain and Breast Pain - Breast Reduction Surgery

Everyday activities such as working and exercising can be hindered by excessive pain and discomfort.

Nearly 1 million American women live with the extra weight of large breasts; however, with prolonged suffering, they become accustomed to the situation. Too many times, an improper fit of a bra does not help and a woman may think her breasts are smaller than they really are.

The larger the breasts, the more the weight pulls you forward, allowing for compression and eventually shoulder pain and headaches. Even the pull of the bra strap on the shoulders can cause intense pain.

Prevention can come in many forms from being fitted for a bra by a professional to physical therapy and from changes in work, activities, and weight loss to medication. However, these may not be enough for some women.

The only thing that is left to ease their breast pain, back pain, and physical challenges is breast reduction surgery.

What is Involved?

Breast reduction surgery is a safe procedure, especially because a plastic surgeon does not remove any muscles or organs. Approximately one pound of breast tissue, fat, and excess skin is removed from each breast. This, of course, depends on the patient. The nipple may be removed and/or repositioned.

While breast reduction surgery is designed to relieve physical complaints, doctors say that aesthetics also play a role. Doctors work to shape the breasts in an eye-pleasing contour, but permanent scarring, both internal and external, is inevitable. This does vary for each woman, but most believe it’s a small price to pay.

General anesthesia is typically required, and the surgery can take up to three hours. Recovery is fairly fast with very little post-procedure pain. For a day or two, the patient may have mild discomfort, but most women are able to go back to work within a week and workout within two.

A Lower Risk of Cancer with Breast Reduction Surgery?

Besides less back and breast pain, research reveals that women who have breast reduction surgery actually have a reduced risk of breast cancer. Leroy Young, MD records the results of six observational studies performed in Canada, Denmark, Sweden, and the U.S. in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

They concluded that women who have breast reduction surgery are at lower risk for breast cancer.

Risks of Breast Reduction Surgery

As with every surgery, there are risks and breast reduction surgery for women with extremely large breasts have to consider whether the risks are worth it. Always consult a plastic surgeon for a complete list, but below are a few notable risks:

  1. Nipple numbness – This describes the lack of sensitivity and a possible decrease in sexual response in this area. While the surgeon intends to preserve the sensation and the nerves, there is potential for temporary or permanent numbness, depending on the patient.
  1. If you are planning to start a family and want to breastfeed, it is possible if your nipple was not removed or repositioned. Doctors recommend waiting to be sure. It is important to note that some women find a decrease in milk or that they can’t breastfeed entirely.

Costs

A woman that is considering a breast reduction surgery should first understand if her insurance policy covers such a procedure. If not, or if she is underinsured, there are medical tourism options that offer state-of-the-art facilities and highly-trained, experienced international surgeons.

To have a breast reduction surgery, a woman may need to travel to Mexico, Costa Rica, Europe, Asia or the Middle East, because the overall price would be far less than the high price tag she would have to pay in the United States.
