It is estimated that more than a half-million Internet users are infected with DNSChanger Malware

MTM has added an application to its web sites that automatically checks if you have that malware on your computer. If you have not seen this your computer does not have the DNSChanger Malware, rest at ease. Infected computers will lose access to the Internet on July 9.

This simple app was provided by our web site security partner Cloudflare. Cloudflare will give these infected Internet users the tools they need to continue to use the Internet.

BACKGROUND

In November 2011, law enforcement arrested and charged a group of cybercriminals believed to be behind DNSChanger, a family of malware that silently redirected infected computers and home routers to malicious DNS servers. Since shutting down the criminals, a court order was issued enabling the Internet Systems Consortium to replace the malicious DNS servers with legitimate DNS servers in order to keep the hundreds of thousands of infected users online.

This effort was coordinated by a group known as the DNS Changer Working Group (aka DCWG http://www.dcwg.org) which will be turning off the DNS servers when the court order expires on July 9, 2012. This will knock infected users who haven’t fixed the problem offline.

By turning on the visitor DNSChanger detector app on Cloudflare, any infected visitors coming to your site will be alerted about their vulnerability and given information on how they can fix it.

SUMMARY

  • Notifies only visitors infected by DNSChanger malware.
  • No performance impact on your website.
  • The app will be turned off automatically when DCWG turns off the DNS servers.
