Plastic Surgery Statistics

Most people, when they hear “plastic surgery,” think breast augmentation, liposuction, or maybe a facelift, in reality, there are several types of plastic surgery, including cosmetic, reconstructive, and treatment of burns.

Plastic Surgery

The cosmetic field of plastic surgery has gained much popularity in recent years and continues to grow, becoming more affordable and socially accepted.

In 1997 just over 4 million cosmetic surgeries were performed in the US. In 2012 alone more than 20 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the U.S., Surgical and nonsurgical, from tummy tucks to chemical peels to laser hair removal.

The main reasoning behind these procedures is commonly to boost self-confidence, improve a specific feature, or simply maintain a youthful image.

Reconstructive surgery is performed to replace or restore damaged body parts due to birth defects, trauma, disease, or developmental abnormalities. Bio-materials, more commonly known as plastic implants, are often used to correct and restore bodily functions back to normal or approximate normal appearance. Reconstructive surgery is a great option for the treatment of burns.

In most cases, the patient must undergo debridement, which is the removal of dead tissue, and then they either receive a skin graft procedure or tissue expansion. Skin grafting can include the removal of a few layers of the outer skin from another area of your body to replace the burnt area or remove the entire dermis layer.

Although plastic surgery can have many great benefits, it is advised to be performed under the correct circumstances with a physician that is trained in a particular procedure.
