Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, otherwise known as OCD
Is an anxiety disorder that affects over a million Americans. Unwanted behavior that overpowers daily life, describes the manifestations of this anxiety disorder.
Anxiety affects everyone and can help us to stay alert. However, for a person with OCD, anxiety disorder interferes with their life, incorporating fears and rituals that he or she knows are excessive and unreasonable.
Constant washing of the hands, plucking hair, working out or cleaning of items are just some of the OCD rituals. Stopping these behaviors may cause more pain than the rituals themselves.
Studies show that Obsessive Compulsive Disorder affects men and women equally, no matter their race or background. The onset of OCD has been found to start around the age of 19.
Thankfully, OCD is treatable and with the help of recent research, doctors have pinpointed a genetic link that allows them to better understand and help their OCD patients.
