Do you like rainbow-colored fruit snacks?

Do your kids choose cereals with bright colors, florescent yogurt, or sugary beverages? Many people, especially children, are drawn to these artificially dyed foods and now, Americans are consuming five times as much food coloring as we did in 1955.

A large number of manufacturers choose synthetic dyes when strategizing their sales tactics.

This can have dangerous health consequences, especially for children. It is important to note that the FDA Food Advisory Committee concluded that there was not enough evidence to say that Red 40, Yellow 5 and other man-made food dyes cause hyperactivity and other behavioral changes. However, more research on food dyes can be done.

If you have concerns and want to cut food dyes from your daily food consumption, here are some things to pursue:

1. Go organic with those foods bearing a green-and-white USDA certified organic label.

2. Avoid colors and numbers such as Blue 1 and 2, Citrus Red 2, Green 3, Red 40, Yellow 5 and 6.

3. Seek out natural names (beet, carotenes, annatto, or capsanthin), which are natural food colorants.

4. The terms “artificial color,” “artificial color added” or “color added” indicate that nature-derived pigments were used. Synthetic dyes must be listed by their names.
