Gingivitis, which is defined as an inflammation of the gums
Commonly develops in response to a plaque on the teeth. Plaque is made up of bacteria and when it builds up, it can attract additional types of bacteria and harden at the base of the teeth.
This hardening is what we refer to as tartar.
Tartar and bacteria irritate the gums, causing chronic inflammation and creating pockets between the teeth and gums. As plaque builds up, the gums and teeth can break down or wear away.
When bacteria enter the bloodstream, the immune system sends white blood cells to fight the bacteria. These platelets activate and increase clotting factors in the blood vessels which can result in blood clots and bodily harm.
