The Google self-driving car is a pretty amazing feat of engineering and technology

So far, the vehicle has covered 200,000 computer-driven miles, which is a milestone in itself. But there was another landmark moment that arose during testing.

The driver,  95% of his vision is gone. He’s blind. And he’s behind the wheel of this car, traveling perfectly across his neighborhood. It’s an amazing feat. A technological miracle.

Steve Mahan, a volunteer who took part in one of Google’s hands-on experiments. At 95 percent deficiency, Steve is legally blind and probably never imagined he’d be able to do the things we all take for granted, like getting behind the wheel. And yet, there he was in the driver’s seat, cruising his neighborhood.

The route that the company wrote for him was carefully programmed as part of several technical tests, likely to see just how far along this project has come. Looks like it’s pretty far, as this appears to be an incredible step forward for autonomous cars, not to mention autonomous people — no matter their circumstances.

Google is not anywhere close to even thinking about retail at this point, and even if they did the cost would be astronomical. The time will come, so start saving for your own self-driving car.
